HE WOKE disoriented. It wasn’t that he was in a strange bed, all hotel room beds felt strange to Jason. It was the sound of the shower running in the other room, the gritty feeling in his eyes.

And then he remembered.

Fuck, was it Henry or Derrik in the shower? Please let it be Henry.

He glanced at the clock. Nine thirty. Knowing the time didn’t give him any better of a guess as to who was in the bathroom.

The water turned off. Jason shut his eyes and pretended to be asleep. If it was Derrik… Jesus, he didn’t want to face the man again after last night. He barely wanted to face Henry. He just wanted to crawl under the nearest rock and die.

Soft footsteps came out of the bathroom. Fabric rustled. Then someone leaned over him and pressed a soft kiss to his temple. Jason smiled. It was Henry. He opened his eyes.

“Sorry if I woke you.”

Jason shook his head. “What time is it?”

“Almost ten. You want me to walk down to the front desk with you, see if we can get you back into your room?”

“Yeah. Sure. I mean… you don’t have to….” The dealers’ room opened at ten, and even if Henry didn’t have to be there right on the dot, he needed to get there soon.

“I want to come with you, Jason. I’d like to take you to breakfast too, if you feel like having me around.”

“What about your booth?”

“Derrik’s going to cover it this morning.”

God. “He must either hate me or think I’m the world’s biggest flake.” Or both.

Henry’s smile surprised him. “I know he was a jerk last night—”

“I’m the one who showed up pounding on your door at four o’clock in the morning, sobbing like some kind of basket case.”

“That wasn’t your fault, Jason. It was mine. I should have realized you were still in a delicate headspace when you left. I should have kept you here.”

Jason shrugged. He didn’t want to argue about it. “Do you have a shirt or something I can borrow?”

“You’ll swim in just about everything I own, but this shouldn’t be too bad.” He handed over a royal-blue terrycloth bathrobe.

“Thanks.”
